This corpus study comares rhetoric structure and linguistic features of Vietnamese research article abstracts (RAAs) and English research article abstracts in the fiels of TESOL. The analysis is based on the 87 research article abstracts written in Vietnamese by Vietnamese people, and 100 research article abstracts written in English by international authors in TESOL field. The rhetorical structures and linguistic feature of the RAAs are examined using Santos’ (1996) model and Halliday’s (2004) transitivity system. The results show that the five-move model of Santos’ (1996) was evident in both sets. However, international TESOL scholar seem to be more direct in presenting their study than Vietnamese authors. The second diffentce is that while the majority of the English RAAs find it necessary to describe methodology of the study, a much smaller percentage of Vietnamese RAAs do so. Besides the five moves presented in Sontos’ (1996) model, there are some variations of moves found. The results of the transitivity analysis suggests more impersonality and objectivity in the English RAAs than in the Vietnamese ones
