Involving students in speaking activities is one of the greatest concerns of teachers of English. This thesis was carried out to investigate the benefit of using debate topics to increase students’ participation in speaking English classes. This study was conducted by quasi-experimental method with 90 students in the two randomly assigned groups. Trial lessons were conducted for each group. Before and after the lessons, observation, questionnaire and interviews were administrated for both groups. The findings of the research revealed that using debate topics increased students’ involvement in speaking lessons. The students found that discussing debate topics made them participate more in the lesson. However, there were some problems the teachers should consider when using this technique such as group size, students’ level of proficiency, time limitation and so on. It is hoped that this thesis will Giúp other teachers of English be aware of the usefulness of debate technique and apply it in their teaching
