Nowadays the communicative approach puts a stress on developing students’ communicative competence. Teachers have been applying various techniques to increase students’ talk in English classes. Among a variety of teaching techniques to stimulate students to talk, eliciting is praised as an effective technique. Therefore, the present research investigates the situation of teachers’ employing techniques to stimulate students’ talk among 10th form students at Luu Nhan Chu high school, namely eliciting techniques teachers employ to stimulate 10th form students to talk, benefits of these techniques, difficulties in using eliciting techniques and solutions to the problem. In the study, questionnaires, interviews and observation were triangulated to collect data. The results showed that all techniques including asking questions, using pictures, using texts and dialogues, conducting games and activities and using non-verbal language were applied in English classes. However, the frequency of employing each technique differed considerably. Additionally, the result revealed that eliciting techniques bring outstanding benefits in stimulating students’ talk, namely giving students more chance to talk, helping students talk easily, making students more confident. Besides, teachers reported that they encountered difficulties in process of employing these techniques namely time consumption, students’ shyness and incomprehensibility of techniques, and teaching and learning conditions. Solutions were also given to deal with each problem. The findings from the study are really useful for both teachers and students
