It is common knowledge that English teaching materials are very important for teachers of English. They are also needed for students to improve their language skills. With the high demand of finding suitable and effective teaching materials for general English in general and for speaking skills in particular, the researcher decided to conduct this minor thesis “Using English reading texts as input for speaking tasks” in order to Giúp students improve their speaking skills. The research is initially carried out to investigate the students’ difficulties in learning speaking at Phuc Yen College of Industry. It then attempts to explore the effect of using English reading texts as input for speaking tasks. The action research is conducted with the instruments: observation, questionnaires and audio-recordings to collect needed data. Moreover, some recommendations are made with the hope of helping English teachers and students at Phuc Yen College of Industry improve the quality of their teaching and learning speaking skills. The thesis consists of three parts namely Introduction, Development and Conclusion. Part one Introduction is an introduction to the thesis, introducing the rationale, aims, focus, research questions, scope, methods and design of the study. Part two Development intends to set up the framework of the study. It focuses on the nature of language skills and communication, definitions of input, the input hypothesis of Krashen’s theory, reading texts as comprehensible input. It then presents the local situation at Phuc Yen College of Industry, with a brief description of the speaking learning and teaching conditions, students, teachers and the course books used for teaching speaking to non-English majors. Furthermore, it describes the research methodology including the description of the subjects, data collection instruments and procedures. This is followed by the discussion and analysis of the data
