M.A. Thesis English Teaching Methodology -- University of Languages and International Studies. Vietnam National University, Hanoi, 2012
Oral presentations represent important exercises for developing real – world communications and leadership skill, so are becoming the topics of interest in many universities. However, teaching oral presentation is a challenging job for most teachers as it not only requires teachers’ skills and knowledge about communications but also calls for more time and effort in lesson plans. Using Gattullo and Harmer’s typology, this paper explores the types of feedback are frequently exploited by teachers and their effectiveness on improving students’ oral presentation skills based on results from a survey questionnaire with 126 students and interviews with 10 students of the second year English-major at Vietnam University of Commerce (VCU). Results showed that strategic feedback was used with the highest level of frequency, followed by evaluative and corrective one. It was so surprising to find out that strategic feedback was regarded by students as the most effective ways of improving students’ oral presentation skills. Corrective feedback ranked second while evaluative feedback was regarded as the least effective one on improving students’ oral presentation skills. The results also indicate that the second year English-majors at VCU highly appreciate self-study, so the teachers should focus their feedback on giving advices and strategies and let students overcome their mistakes themselves
