M.A Thesis English Teaching Methodology -- University of Languages and International Studies. Vietnam National University, Hanoi, 2011
This qualitative study explored how teachers implemented Task – Based Language Teaching (TBLT) in a Vietnamese upper-secondary school. Data was collected by means of semi-structured interviews, classroom observations and post - observation interviews, and then analyzed qualitatively. Findings showed that teachers had a vague understanding of TBLT despite their positive attitudes towards this approach. This resulted in a gap between the intended curriculum and teachers’ actual implementation. According to the teachers, there are multiple variables accounting for that gap. These include washback effects of the examinations, time constraints, large class sizes, lack of motivation, language proficiency of students, professional competence and teacher preparation. The study suggests that teachers need to have adequate understanding of the intended innovation and necessary support so that they can implement the innovation successfully. Also, the study suggests that it is necessary to take into consideration many factors affecting the implementation of the innovation in English Language Teaching (ELT)
