Of the four language skills, speaking is an important one. However, in the reality, the ability to speak English of the students at Ly Thai To high school was still far from satisfaction. The study focuses on the students’ attitudes towards learning to speak and the reasons why they had these attitudes. The subjects involved in the study were 200 students from five classes (10A4, 10A5, 10A6, 10A10, 10A11) and 4 teachers teaching English for grade 10. Findings from the questionnaire, classroom observations and interviews showed that students at Ly Thai To high school had negative attitudes towards learning to speak English although they found speaking English important. Based on such findings, some suggestions are given with the hope that they might be useful for the teachers at Ly Thai To high school in Bac Ninh to develop their students’ speaking skill
