This case study examined willingness to communicate (WTC) in the target language of language learners who were studying English as a foreign language in a Vietnamese college setting. The research aimed at detecting participants’ level of WTC and factors significantly affecting their enthusiasm and readiness to use English in speaking activities from their own perspectives. Sixteen interviews during a sixteen-week course, including one interview stage 1 and fifteen interviews stage 2 with each of four participants were conducted. In addition to those semi-structured interviews, diaries with guiding questions were also used as a supplementary data collecting tool. However, data collected from only two cases were analyzed as the other two participants repeated some abrupt absences from their English class. The results of the study showed that both interviewers on their own believed that they became increasingly willing to speak English with their peers in class. Such changes were considered to be caused by a variety of factors with the most three noticeable elements, namely attitude to target language, format and content of the activity, and teacher’s support. The two informants also emphasized their critical needs for more various and organized language input, more teacher’s corrective feedback, and stricter classroom management to ensure equal communication opportunities among students. Despite some certain limitations, this study proposes several pedagogical implications for English teaching and learning. A better understanding of students’ WTC in the target language may Giúp language teachers improve the communicative language teaching approach and curriculum design to provide more communication opportunities for language learners, more importantly, encourage actual engagement into communication behaviors, and finally, facilitate second/foreign language learning and acquisition
