This thesis is carried out to investigate the effectiveness of using of pair work and group work activities to develop speaking skills for the first year non-English major students at Hanoi Community College. Two classes are taught speaking by two different methods: one class is taught by a teacher according to the program of the course book while a second class includes use of pair/group work. Two data collection instruments are used: pre-test/post-test and questionnaires. The results of the research show the differences between the two classes. The ability of speaking of the group that use pair/group work improves. This suggests that the use of pair/group work assisted learning program for at least some of the teaching time available can be recommended for speaking lessons.
