This thesis deals with an aspect of word use, which is the collocations in the course book “New Headway Pre-Intermediate” the third edition by John and Liz Soars (2007) and common errors in collocations by non English major students at HUST. In recent years, the importance of collocations has been increasingly recognized and it is widely assumed that collocations play a major role in language process and use. Therefore, research on collocation should be conducted to improve collocational competence among learners of English. The first aim of this research paper is to investigate the collocations in the course book in order to identify their types and frequency of use. The other aims are to find out common errors on collocations by the non English major students and their possible causes. To achieve these aims, the author managed to collect data from course book analysis, tests on collocations and survey questionnaires. The test was completed by 96 non English major students at TOEIC 1 level at HUST and the results are analysed to find out the common errors and their possible causes. The questionnaires were accomplished by 35 teachers at FoFL, HUST and the result analysis can Giúp to identify teachers’ attitudes towards teaching collocations, causes of students’ collocational errors, methods of teaching collocations and learning collocations. Basing on the findings of the study, the author has given out some suggestions for teachers and students in teaching and learning collocations
