This study was conducted to obtain knowledge about the evaluation of the in-class listening materials used in the first semester for first-year English majors at The Faculty of Foreign Language Teacher Education (FELTE), University of Languages and International Studies (ULIS), Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) from the perspectives of the users of the materials (i.e. first-year English majors at FELTE and their listening teachers (Ts)). It took into consideration the listening needs of the target students (Ss) in order to suggest changes for the improvements for teaching listening skill to first-year English majors at FELTE. The participants included 100 Ss chosen randomly among 303 first-year English majors at FELTE, ULIS, VNU and all 12 Ts who were in charge of teaching listening skill in the “listening-speaking 1” course. Three survey questionnaires, two follow-up interviews, task performance measurement and classroom observation were employed to discover the participants’ perspectives of the Ss’ listening needs and how the materials met these needs. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were used to analyse data obtained from the aforementioned data collection instruments. Quantitative data were processed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The findings of the research provided insight into the listening needs of first-year Ss at FELTE, ULIS, VNU as well as how the current in-class listening materials were evaluated in the Ss and Ts’ viewpoints. It can be clearly seen from the results of the study that listening to English was a challenge to the Ss. Hence, they needed support in various forms such as facilities, materials, teachers’ guidance, etc. in order to improve their listening skill. The results were generally in favour of the materials. However, there was a need to improve some elements of the materials such as language input, the sound quality of the recordings, etc. to better meet the Ss’ needs. Based on the findings of the study, some recommendations for the materials being evaluated and other elements of the listening course were suggested
