The purpose of this study was to investigate which communicative activities used in teaching speaking English at Ha Noi Foreign Language Center. In addition, it also suggested three communicative activities (that is, role-play, information gap, and discussion) to reduce pre-intermediate level learners’ anxiety in speaking lessons at this center. After that, the author made a comparison about which activities have effects on reducing their anxiety in speaking English. A total of 20 pre-intermediate level learners participated in the study. The approach to data analysis was qualitative. Data for the study came from classroom observations and questionnaires for students, both pre-questionnaire and post-questionnaire. First of all, the author observed all the learners in the class to find out that they are extremely anxious in speaking English. Then, the author delivered the learners pre-questionnaire to collect their opinions of communicative activities used in speaking lessons. The result shows that they are not confident or even anxious in their speaking. Furthermore, only a few communicative activities were used in their speaking lessons such as pairs/ groups, role – plays, and interviews. From these results, the author planned an action plan with implementing three communicative activities in speaking lessons. Based on the data from post-questionnaire and classroom observations, the author recognized that the learners become more confident in speaking English in class. Moreover, the author also makes a comparative table and find out that discussion activity has the most effect on reducing the learners’ anxiety in speaking English among three communicative activities given out in the study. This study contributes to the understanding of the learners’ anxiety about language learning. Moreover, it plays a part in reducing the learners’ anxiety in speaking English in particular as well as enhancing their language ability in general
