Passage 1
One of the smallest countries in the world is San Marino, which is high in the mountain of
Italy. It is also the oldest because it was founded some 1,500 years ago. San Marino covers
61 square kilometers and has over 17 thousand people. Its coins and stamps are eagerly
bought by collectors.
Another popular small country is Andorra, the mountain state of 11 thousand people between
France and Spain. Anyone who collects the stamps of Andorra soon notices a strange thing
about them. Some stamps are printed in Spain. Other stamps are like French stamps. The
reason is: for 700 years, the state has been under the joint protection of France and Spain, and
these two countries have separate postal services in Andorra. You can find two post offices
standing next to each other in a village, but selling different stamps.

I just wanted to say thank you for putting me up before I caught the plane last week. It was a lovely
evening, and I enjoyed meeting your friends, Peter and Sarah. I managed to get to the airport with
plenty of time to spare. I even tried to get an earlier flight, but it wasn’t possible.
I had a wonderful holiday in Spain. I just loved driving through the countryside, and I often stopped
to walk round a mountain village. I met my friends, Bill and Sue, and they invited me to have a meal
with them. They wanted me to stay with them, but I couldn’t, as I had already booked a hotel.
The weather was fantastic. The sun didn’t stop shining all the time I was there. Leaving Spain was
very sad. It made me want to cry.
I am looking forward to hearing from you, and hope to see you soon.
Best wishes, Sandra.
