The researcher’s underlying aim in carrying out this research is to examine the effect of using information gap activities on promoting students’ participation and motivation in speaking lessons for second-year students in University of Social Sciences and Humanities. Therefore, a quasi-experimental research was conducted to achieve the aim. The sample of the study consisted of 60 students from two classes. The researcher designed activities related to speaking topics in New English File - intermediate textbook. The activities which were based on information gap concept were used in teaching the experimental group, while the ordinary method was used in teaching the control one in four weeks. The data collection instruments included a self-report questionnaireand two observation sheets were used to measure the differences between the performance of the two groups in the speaking lesson. The overall result was that there was a great improvement in the motivation and participation of the students in the experimental group in speaking lessons. It can be concluded that IGA had a positive effect on student’s motivation and participation in speaking lessons in the context of the study
