Learning motivation, a recurrent topic in language teaching over the last century, has been advocated both from a pedagogical point of view and from the perspective of psychology. It is one of the robust factors leading to the success in foreign language learning as well as life-long learning. Therefore, in view of the necessity of learning motivation in the foreign language classroom contexts, the aim of this study is to foster motivation of learners in learning English as a foreign language by applying oral presentation activity into the teaching and learning process. The study is an action research conducted with 28 students from class 10A1 (school year 2010-2011) of Doan Thi Diem High School in Hanoi. In the first place, a pre-treatment questionnaire was implemented to investigate the students’ motivational state and factors that negatively affect their learning. Then, to achieve the goal of the study, a ten-week oral presentation skill training program was designed to train them the necessary skills in making an oral presentation, and applying proposed activities. After ten weeks of implementing the action plan, a post-treatment questionnaire together with three follow-up interviews was administered to discover the change in their motivational state. The findings analyzed against a set of given criteria revealed that after having worked with this action plan, most of these learners positively changed their attitudes towards the subject as well as improved their participation in English learning process. They became more self-confident and motivated to continue participating in their English lessons. This suggests a way of involving more student active engagement in their learning process if they previously showed their passiveness and demotivation in the subject
