Miêu tả:Motivation has always had profound effects on students’language learning in general and in students’learning English in particular. Being a teacher of English for 6 years and having taught a number of different skills to students at high school, the author has noticed that the grade 10 students show their lack of motivation in learning and practicing English, especially the speaking skill. Many students are not interested and do not invest enough time and efforts in learning and practicing this skill. That’s why within my minor thesis, I would like concern with types of motivation possessed by grade 10 students in learning speaking English and find out their expectations of speaking teaching based on the basis of students’ and teachers’responses presented in two survey questionnaires, and in the informal interview for students. A total of 120 tenth form students and 6 teachers currently teaching grade 10 at Hoa Lu A high school, Ninh Binh province participated in the survey. The result showed that most respondants possessed instrumental motivation, they feel reluctant to take part in speaking activities because of their shyness; lack of vocabulary and ideas, bad at grammar and pronunciation. Moreover, from students’responses in survey questionnaire and informal interview, and teachers’responses in survey questionnaire, the researcher knew students’expectation of speaking teaching and proposed some recommendations for teachers to motivate students to speak. It is also hoped that this research would be useful and practical for teachers and learners at high school in general, and teachers and learners at Hoa Lu A high school in particular
