The study explores communicative activities in teaching grammar at Tran Phu School, Thai Nguyen. The study seeks to find out the methods that have been used to teach English grammar at Tran Phu School; the extent that the application of communicative activities could enhance the teaching and learning of English grammar as well as the appropriate communicative activities that could be used in teaching grammar at Tran Phu. A survey using a modified phiên bản of Q-methodology was used (Khoshgooyanfard, 2011: 485). The results show that teachers at Tran Phu High School used Grammar Translation Method as the main one to teach grammar. Recently, they have used CLT in teaching grammar. However, teachers’ understanding of CLT is still far from appropriate although all of them have joined training workshops on CLT. The extent that the application of communicative activities could enhance the teaching and learning of English grammar at Tran Phu School is still limited. On the basis of the findings, some appropriate communicative activities to teach grammar communicatively are recommended
the study are four teachers. Three of them have over five – year – teaching
experience, and one has been teaching for two years. All these teachers have
joined workshops of new teaching methods.
2.3. Instrument
A survey question list following Q-methodology was used as a tool to
collect data. It is used to find out answers to the questions which relate to
grammar teaching approaches have been used at Tran Phu School (research
question 1), which communicative activities are effective or not in teaching
grammar at this school (research question 2), and what kinds of
communicative activities should be used more to teach grammar at Tran Phu
school.
The survey questions are grouped according to each specific purpose of
the three research questions.
Firstly, questions 1 and 2 are designed to find out the methods that
were used to teach grammar and their effect in helping students use grammar
communicatively.
Secondly, questions 3 and 4 aim to explore the current methods of
teaching grammar at Tran Phu school as well as their practicability at this
institution. Nowadays, one popular teaching method is Communicative
Language Teaching, I wonder if all the teachers at this school apply this
method to teach grammar, and if yes, how they understand the concept of
CLT. This is the content of the next two questions, 5 and 6.
Then, questions 7 and 8 are used to ask the teachers‟ grammar teaching
process, kinds of activities used in teaching grammar and their frequency of
use as well.
