This minor thesis was carried out with an attempt to improve students’ writing skill at Phu Tho Centre for Foreign Languages and Informatics. The thesis has the objectives of exploring the reasons for the students’ weak writing competence and justifying the effectiveness of combining brainstorming and modelling on improving students’ writing skill. Participants were a group of 30 students of an English supplementary training class who are teachers at some kindergartens in Phu Ninh district, Phu Tho province. An action research on the combination of brainstorming and modelling at the pre-writing stage was designed and conducted for 12 weeks. The data collected via pre-questionnaire, post-questionnaire, pre-test, post-test and students’ writing and were analyzed mainly quantitatively. Findings revealed that students’ weak writing competence was due to poorly conducted activities by the teacher at the pre-writing stage, students’ passive learning habit and their personal circumstances. Findings also indicated that combining brainstorming and modelling at the pre-writing stage not only had the positive effect on the students’ writing performance but helped students become more active and confident in writing as well
