A lot of people worry about the African chimpanzee. Its population in the wild is shrinking because it
is hunted to be sold. For every chimp that is taken alive, five to ten chimps die. In the past fifty years,
Africans have sold three to four thousand chimps for use in business and experiments. If this practice
continues, the chimp may become extinct.
The United States may soon join the other ninety-nine nations that prevent chimps from being bought
and sold. In Washington, D.C., the Interior Department recommends putting the chimpanzee on the
endangered animals list, which will make it against the law to sell them to the United States. Once on the
list, they will have a better chance to survive.
