If you’re an environmentalist, plastic is a word you tend to say with a sneer (cười khinh bỉ) or a snarl (tiếng gầm
gừ). It has become a symbol of our wasteful, throw-away society. But there seems little (56 doubt) it is here to stay, and
the truth is, of course, that plastics have brought enormous (57 benefits), even environmental ones. It’s not really the
plastics themselves that are the environmental (58 evil-xấu, ác) – it’s the way society chooses to use and (59 abuse- lạm
dụng) them. Almost all the 50 or so different kinds of modern plastic are made from oil, gas or coal – nonrenewable
natural (60 resources). We (61 import) well over three million tons of the stuff in Britain each year and, sooner or later,
most of it is thrown away. A high (62 proportion) of our annual consumption is in the (63 form) of packaging, and this
(64 constitutes) about seven per cent by weight, of our domestic (65 refuse). Almost all of it could be recycled, but very
little of it is, though the plastic recycling (66 industry) is growing fast. The plastics themselves are extremely energy-rich
– they have a higher calorific (67 value) than coal and one (68 method) of ‘recovery’ strongly (69 favoured) by the plastic
manufacturers is the (70 conversion) of waste plastic into fuel.

As late as 1800, women’s only place was in the home. The idea of women in the business world was unthinkable.
No “nice” woman would dream of entering what was strictly a “man’s world.” Even if she could, what would she do?
Men were positive that no woman could handle a job outside her home. This was such a widely accepted idea that when
the famous Brontë sisters began writing books in 1846, they disguised themselves by signing their books with men’s
names. Teaching was the first profession open to women soon after 1800. But even that was not an easy profession for
women to enter because most high schools and colleges were open only to men. Oberlin College in Ohio was the first
college in America to accept women.
Hospital nursing became respectable work for women only after Florence Nightingale became famous. Because
she was a wealthy and cultured woman, as well as a nurse, people began to believe it was possible for women to nurse the
sick and still be “ladies.” Miss Nightingale opened England’s first training school for nurses in 1860.
The invention of the typewriter in 1867 helped to bring women out of the home and into the business world.
Because women had slender, quick fingers, they learned to operate typewriters quickly and well. Businessmen found that
they had to hire women for this new kind of work. By 1900, thousands of women were working at real jobs in schools,
hospitals, and offices in both England and America. Some women even managed to become doctors or lawyers. The idea
that “nice” women could work in the business world had been accepted.
