WILL SUBSTITUTE HORN SAVE RHINO'S SKINS?
Last year thieves broke into a Scottish stately home and stole one thing: a rhino horn trophy, which at 1.5 metres
was the longest in the world. Meanwhile, in China, pharmaceuticals (45)______ have been building up collections of
antqiue cups, bowls and figurines made from rhino horn, for the sole (46)______ of smashing them to powder to make
the (47) _____ ingredient of many of their medicines. And in Zimbabwe, 34 poachers have so far died this year in
(48)_____ of the black rhino.
‘It’s amazing the lengths people will go to to get rhino horn,’ said Lyster, of the World Wide Fund for Nature.
These lengths (49)_____ why the rhino could be extinct within 10 years if trade in horns to the Far East is not stopped.
This week, conservationists are meeting in Switzerland to plan a campaign to persuade those countries where rhino horn
is part of the traditional medicine to switch to substitutes such as water buffalo horn.
The biggest threat to the survival of the rhinoceros is the refusal of four countries - China, Thailand, South Korea
and Thaiwan - to enforce a ban (50)_____ domestic trading in rhino horn. Similar bans have worked well in Japan, Hong
Kong and nearby Macau.
Rhino is included in many patent remedies for disorders ranging from high fever to nosebleeds. Horn is made
(52)______ keratin, and has no proven medicinal powers. ‘If you want the same effect you might as well chew your
fingernails,’ said Esmond Bradley Martin, a world authority on rhino horn who has just returned from China. Traditional
substitutes, such as horn from bufffalo or saiga antelope, are (53)______ second best.
China is the country where the consumers of rhino horn are the largest, many people are making medicines for
both home consumption and export to other Far Eastern countries. Martin found that many places have stocks of 10,000
kilograms of horns. This represents 3,500 rhinos, or the entire population of African black rhinos. These places use 650
kilograms a year. Traditional medicines made outside the official factories could consume much more.
‘This is a (an) (53)______ battle,’ said Lyster. (54)______ the battle may be harder than that against the trade in
ivory, for there is a difference between the two commodities, Ivory is a luxury; rhino horn, people believe, could save the

each of the questions from 55 to 64.
The weather phenomenon called El Nino was first recorded in the 1500s when fishermen in South America
noticed that near Christmas some years the water was noticeably warmer than others. They named this El Nino, or the
infant, as it happened near the celebration of the birth of Christ.
Only in recent years has there been any serious investigations into the causes and results of El Nino. The 1997 1998 El Nino was the first to be studied extensively. Scientists from France, Japan, Korea and Taiwan combined the
various readings they had from satellite and surface measurements of wind speeds and water temperatures to make the
Tropical Atmosphere Ocean Array. This combined information allowed them to see the overall patterns of an El Nino
and helped them predict when one was starting.
