UNIT 4 : LEARNING A FOREIGN LANGUAGE
LESSON 1 : GETTING STARTED + LISTEN AND READ
I-AIMS AND OBJECTIVES:
- Language content: -To introduce some new words relating to learning English.
-To enable Ss to learn the structure of reported questions and reported speech .
- Language function – To help Ss practise a dialogue and learn the reported questions as well ,
- Talking about the way to learn foreign language.
- By the end of the lesson, the sts will be able to produce the reported questions
- Educational aim: -To help the Ss have their best methods to learn English.
- To make Ss aware of the importance of learning English
1- Language:
a- Vocabulary:(n) aspect, examiner, college, candidate, written examination, oral examination
b- Structures: S + asked/ said +………+ S + V ( simple past).
2- Skills: Integrated skills.
3- Educational factor: Knowing to learn a foreign language effectively.
Try their best to improve their English better
II- TEACHER AND STUDENTS’PREPARATION:
1- Method: Communicative approach.
2- Techniques: Explanation, using pictures, groupwork, questions- answers, T-F statements,
role play, translation, definition,net work or “SO DO TU DUY”
3- Materials needed:Textbook, pictures, cassette player.
4- Students’preparation: Pictures, new lesson.
5- Previous exercises: The Teacher’s key to the last exercises.
III- PROCEDURE IN CLASS:

* chatting: has Ss listen and answer the questions
- Do you like learning English ? (yes)
- Which of these subjects are you interested in : speaking, listeniing, erading, writing ?
- How do you learn speaking, listeniing, erading, writing ?
Presents : today we’re going to find the way how to learn a foreign language as well as
English

(5ms)
I. Getting Started:
- Asks the Ss to think about the ways how to learn and improve their English
- presents “SODOTUDUY”
- divides the class into 6 groups . Each group has to disolve a problem above in 2
minutes.
- provides the groups with flash cards to express their opinion. Then show the cards on
the board
- corrects and remarks the result
Here are the eliciting answers;
+ How to learn speaking? Practice speaking English with teacher, with friends and with
others if possible. Speak English in class, at home , at school, ….
+ How to learn reading? Read short stories or newspapers in English. Use a dictionary.
+ How to learn listening? Practice listening to English tapes or English news on T.V/
the radio . Watch English movies.
+ How to learn writing ? practicce writing English as much as possible. Write diary/
letter in English
+ How to learn vocabulary ? learn by heart all the new words. Use a dictionary.
+ How to learn grammar? Do the grammar exercises carefully. Write sentences with the
new words/ the new stuctures…….
2. PRE- PRACTICE

3.CONTROLLED PRACTICE:
-Asks Ss to listen to the dialogue
between Lan and Paola, and check
if their answers are correct or not
- Plays the tape again gives
feedback
 She asked 8 questions.
- Calls on some pairs of Ss to read
the dialogue.
- Corrects their pronunciation/
intonation
- Asks the Ss to read the dialogue
and answer the question:
What exactly did she ask Lan?
-Lets the sts read the list of
questions for the oral examination
of Royal English College
- Gets them to read the dialogue
again and decide what questions
that the examiner asked Lan.
- Lets the Ss do the exercise

4. FREE PRACTICE
- Asks the Ss to work in pairs to
practice asking and answering. One
student plays the role of examiner
and another plays the role of Lan.
- Calls on some pairs to practice in
front of the class.
- Corrects their pronunciation.
-Asks Ss to make the reported
speech with the left ones in the list
a. Do you live with your parents?
b. How long have you learned
English ?
c. What are your hobbies ?
- calls on some Ss to write their
sentences on the board
- gives feedback
work in open pairs

5. Production:
a. He asked me if I lived
with my parents.

III. Homework:
- rewrite Lan’s questions
in reported speech in their
notebooks, and learn
carefully
