I. Kiến thức cơ bản:
_ Who : được làm chủ ngữ hoặc tân ngữ thay cho danh từ chỉ người
Ex: Jack is the boy who plays the guitar
_ Whom : có thể được dùng làm tân ngữ thay cho who ( được dùng trong lối nói trang trọng )
Ex: The boy whom we are looking for is Tom
_ Which : được dùng làm chủ ngữ hoặc tân ngữ thay cho danh từ chỉ vật hoặc sự việc
Ex:She works for a company which makes washing machines
_ That : được dùng thay cho danh từ chỉ người hoặc vật . That có thể được dùng thay cho who,
which, whom trong mệnh đề xác định (defining relative clauses)
Ex: I don’t like the story that /which have unhappy endings .
*Bắt buộc sử dụng “that” khi nó thay thế cho tính từ so sánh ở bậc nhất ( the best, the most
interesting…), everybody, everything, anything, nothing, something…, sau all, mush, little,
any, none,…
Ex: He’s the best teacher that I have ever known.
_ Whose : được dùng để chỉ sự sở hữu cho danh từ chỉ người hoặc vật đứng trước . Danh từ
sau whose không có mạo từ .
Ex: What is the name of the man whose car you borrowed ?
* Có 2 loại mệnh đề quan hệ : xác định và không xác định .
1. Defining relative clauses : ( mệnh đề quan hệ xác đinh)
+ Mệnh đề quan hệ xác định đi sau 1 cụm danh từ và làm rõ người hoặc vật chúng ta nói về .
Ex: People who drink and drive are a danger to everyone .
This is a horse that won last year’s race.
+Mệnh đề quan hệ xác định có thể đi sau a/ an- danh từ
Ex: The book is about a boy who runs away from home
+ Giữa danh từ / đại từ và mệnh đề quan hệ không có dấu phẩy .
+ Mệnh đề quan hệ là thành phần không thể lược bỏ trong câu .
2. Non- defining relative clauses ( mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định)
+Mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định đi sau 1 cụm danh từ đã được xác định từ trước mà không
cần định nghĩa hoặc giải thích gì thêm .
Ex: Bill, who won the race last year , hopes to win again
Her car, whose tyres were bad, skidded on the wet road
