I. As a result of years of research, we know that too much animal fat is bad
for health, For example, Americans eat a lot of meat and only a small
amount of grains, fruit, and vegetables. Because of their diet, they have high
rates of cancer and heart disease. In Japan, in contrast, people eat large
amounts of grains and very little meat. The Japanese also have very low
rates of cancer and heart disease. In fact, the Japanese live longer than
anyone else in the world. Unfortunately, when Japanese people move to the
United States, the rates of heart disease and cancer increase as their diet
changes. Moreover, as hamburgers, ice – cream, and other high – far foods
become popular in Japan, the rates of heart disease and cancer are
increasing there as well. People are also eating more meat and dairy products
in other countries such as Cuba, Mauritius, and Hungary. Not surprisingly,
the disease rates in these countries are increasing along with the change in
diet. Consequently, doctors everywhere advise people to eat more grains,
fruit and vegetables and to eat less meat and fewer dairy products.

III. Halloween is one of the most famous holidays in the U.S., and it is on
October 31. People carve pumpkins and make funny faces on them. These
are called “Jack – O – Lanterns”. On October 31, children wear a special
costume such as a witch, ghost, or clown. They go to many houses and they
knock on the door saying, “Trick or Treat!” It means that if people don’t
give them a treat, they will play some kind of trick on the household. So,
usually people give candy to them. I carved my first Halloween pumpkin at
my Friendship Family’s hous. First, I cut open the top of the pumpkin and
pulled the seeds out. Is was not good for me because is was sticky and
smelled bad. I had never carved a pumpkin, so it was interesting for me.

IV. Guglielmo Marconi was born in Italy in 1874. He studied in Bologna
and since his childhood, he showed great interest in physics and electricity.
Basing his studies on Hertz’s findings, Marconi concluded that the
electromagnetic waves could transmit messages, so he conducted his
research in that direction. As Marconi did not get any financial incentives
from the Italian government, he moved to England where he got funds for
his research. In 1897, Marconi was able to communicate via radio through
the Bristol Channel. In 1901, he transmitted long – wave radio signals across
the Atlantic Ocean. At that time, Marconi was already recognized as a great
name in science and technology. In 1909, he shared the Nobel Prize in
physics with Karl Ferdinand Braun, a German physicist, who worked on
wireless telegraphy and cathode rays. Marconi died in 1937.
