Studies on linguistic ambiguity in the past few decades were entirely devoted to cognitive mechanism and pointing out different perspectives of ambiguity resolution. Common registers like newspaper headlines and advertisements, which make use of linguistic ambiguity, have attracted the interests of various linguists and non-linguists, concurrently reaching related conclusions about the most frequently used types of ambiguity in those areas. Nevertheless, interesting as it is, linguistic ambiguity in the context of humor in general and verbal jokes in particular has been explored satisfactorily by very few papers. Motivated by this recognition, the present study is conducted, ultimately aiming at finding out how linguistic ambiguity becomes the major vehicle of creating humorous speech acts in 50 collected English verbal jokes. The results of the study, hopefully can bring about a panorama of the applications of linguistic ambiguity in the register of English verbal jokes, and serve well as an informative source for both pedagogical and research purposes. Also from the study, such a challenging issue as linguistic ambiguity in the context of humor would be considered more motivating for more researchers to carry out further studies
