The present study examines students’ awareness of eight speech acts, namely greeting, addressing, introducing, requests and responses, choice of conversation topics, inviting, parting, and thanks and responses as well as their pragmalinguistic and sociopragmatic understanding based on these speech acts. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected from 50 English non-major students at Vietnam university of Commerce, via one survey questionnaire, and analyzed with reference to baseline data collected from 5 Americans via the same method. Main findings of the research were discussed. First, students’ awareness of these speech acts was still low. Students showed their highest awareness of the speech act of request while that of greeting was least noticed. Second, their pragmalinguistic awareness and sociopragmatic awareness were still limited. The aspect of politeness was paid the most attention to while that of cultural norms was least focused on. Some implications were drawn out to raise students’ pragmalinguistic and sociopragmatic awareness. Among others, teaching students pragmatic and cultural knowledge were considered the most important to promote students’ pragmatic awareness. The study is believed to be a reliable and useful source of reference for teachers, students and those who are concerned about the subject matter
