Everybody needs to have motivation and a reason for action. Second and foreign language learners should be offered the opportunity to be motivated and fulfill their learning orientations. This study focuses on increasing 11th grade students’ motivation in speaking lessons by applying communicative activities. Then, the thesis examines the students’ level of motivation for learning speaking English at Vietnam – Poland high school. Additionally, the study aims to recognize the factors affecting the students’ motivation. Specifically, the study was conducted in the form of an action research, with the subjects of study being forty – five students of class 11A1, Vietnam – Poland High School. Forty – five students participated in completing questionnaires reflecting their orientations for learning English and what affects negatively their English learning motivation. The data collected by questionnaires and class observations. To answer the research questions, three experimental speaking lessons were conducted with the activities considered appropriate for the learners. The effectiveness of the lessons was then assessed through questionnaire 2 and class observation sheets. The results showed that the three experimental speaking lessons have succeeded in motivating the students to use English to achieve the communicative goals in the classroom activities. At last, it is hoped that the results of this study could be much of benefit for developing teaching and leaning English in the Vietnam – Poland high school
