In recent years, a new standard for English proficiency in the workplace, TOEIC has been set in equivalent to IELTS and TOEFL in academic contexts. While a lot of efforts have been made to teach the TOEIC listening and reading skills, far less attention is paid to TOEIC speaking skills. The research in this minor thesis is carried out to investigate the reality of teaching the TOEIC speaking skills to students at Bac Ha International University. From a questionnaire survey on lecturers and students, the study found out that the lecturers have met certain difficulties in teaching TOEIC speaking at BHIU such as students’ low level of English speaking competence, students’ low motivation level, students’ passive learning style and large and multi-level classes. Also, the lecturers found it very hard to Giúp their students to have appropriate intonation and stress, to improve their listening competence to understand the questions, to recognize the relationship between the sender and the receiver of the message, and to support their answers with reasons, details or examples. These difficulties were then discussed in the lecturers’ group interview to figure out possible solutions. In short, it is hoped that this thesis will Giúp to improve the teaching and studying of TOEIC speaking skills at Bac Ha International University as well as pave the way for future studies in this field.
