This was an action research aiming at seeking out the causes of students’ poor participation in speaking classes and solutions to the problem. The research was conducted on 30 subjects who were the first year English major students at Hanoi Pedagogical University No.2. The result from initial data showed that one of the main causes of students’ poor participation was teaching techniques which did not really get students actively involved in speaking activities. After the problem was defined, an action plan was implemented with the use of three cooperative techniques: Jigsaw, Numbered Heads Together and Think-pair-share which were implicated from previous studies to be an effective tool for improving students’ interaction in English classes. Data collected from survey questionnaires, students’ self-report, and observations gave positive results showing the significant increase in students’ participation in speaking class. This proved positive effects of Jigsaw, Numbered Heads Together and Think-pair-share on students’ participation in speaking classes
