The study was designed to examine the effects of the current English collocation instruction on the essay writing scores and the use of language in writing of first year non-native English-major students at HUST. Data for the study were collected from 21 non-native English-major students using the two writing tests and semi-structured interviews. The results show that English collocation instruction was effective in improving the students’ overall writing scores. English collocation instruction also led to better use of language in writing. Statistical analysis indicates that the quantity of correct collocations and the writing scores of non-native English-major students were positively correlated. There was a significant negative correlation between the number of grammatical collocational errors and the writing scores of non-native English-major students. However, no correlation between the quantity of lexical collocational errors and the writing scores of non-native English-major students was found. The findings from the semi-structured interviews indicate that the students found collocation instruction useful to them in many ways. They have become aware of the importance of collocations in language learning. The students have also developed the habits of learning collocations independently outside the classroom. Pedagogical implications and suggestions for further research are provided on the basis of the research findings
