It is the fact that speaking is an important language skill. However, in the reality, the teaching and learning English speaking are still far from satisfactory. The purpose of the study reported in this paper was to develop supplementary materials to teach speaking skills for first year English majors in their Speaking 2 lessons. Participants of the study were 94 English major freshmen and 12 teachers at English Division, Foreign Languages Department of Phuong Dong University. Two sets of survey questionnaires and semi-structure interviews were used to gather both quantitative and qualitative data. The results indicate that students have many difficulties in learning speaking skills, of which students’ deficiencies in vocabulary and grammar knowledge are two most popular ones. Meanwhile, the textbook fails to Giúp the students overcome their problems since it provide insufficient work of grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. As a result, both of the students and teachers support the application of supplementary materials in the speaking lessons. Some recommendations for the teaching and learning speaking skills which necessitates the supplementation of materials for vocabulary, grammar, speaking activities and pronunciation as a remedial approach to students’ difficulties and textbook’s limitations are discussed. Hopefully, the findings and suggestions of the study would aid English teachers at PDU in their speaking lessons. The effectiveness of teaching speaking skills for first year English majors at PDU; therefore, would be improved
