This study examines the feasibility of using portfolio assessment to motivate grade nine students to learn English at Nam Hai lower secondary school. The study was implemented on a class of thirty-eight students. The questionnaires, the interviews and the students’ portfolios were used to investigate the teacher and students’ attitudes towards the application of portfolio assessment program and its effects on students’ motivation and proficiency in learning the English subject. As part of the study, portfolios and portfolio assessment activities were integrated into the content of the “Tieng Anh 9” textbook, which was the main material for the entire syllabus. The analysis of the students and teacher responses showed that the portfolio assessment could Giúp students to increase their motivation and proficiency in learning English, and the application of the method for grade nine students is feasible. On the other hand, the outcomes of the study and some recommendations will bring practical advantages to teaching and learning the subject. Besides, teachers and learners will come to know the useful role of portfolio assessment and make use of some portfolio assessment techniques effectively
