With the open-door policy as well as the development trend in sea-transport economy, maritime English has become more and more multi-lingual and multi-cultural, thus mastering maritime English draws a public concern. Maritime College, as its name implies, is one of school has been training Vietnamese officers, crew served in maritime field. Students graduated from this school will be able to be seamen good at specialized knowledge as well as maritime English. In order to communicate with other seamen, ships or shore stations in English, seafarers have to be abundant in vocabulary. In English lessons, learning new maritime words will be easier if students had their prior knowledge. In this paper, the author focuses on the study the ways of activating students’ specialized knowledge through illustrations for marine engineering vocabulary learning
