Quy tắc về trọng âm của từ trong tiếng Anh
Có 2 quy tắc đơn giản về trọng âm của từ:
1. Một từ chỉ có 1âm tiết ( syllable) có trọng âm chính được phát âm rõ hơn, cao hơn và dài hơn các
âm tiết khác. Những từ có nhiều âm tiết có thêm 1 trọng âm phụ phát âm nhỏ hơn trọng âm chính.
2. Chỉ những âm tiết có nguyên âm mới có trọng âm.
Phần lớn từ vựng theo quy tắc này, tuy nhiên vẫn còn nhiều ngoại lệ.
1.Trọng âm trên âm tiết thứ nhất.

Nhiều từ có 2 âm tiết thay đổi ý nghĩa và từ loại khi thay đổi vị trí trọng âm (homographs) . Ví dụ từ
present là từ có 2 âm tiết. Khi trọng âm trên âm tiết thứ nhất, nó là danh từ (đồng nghĩa với gift=món quà)
hoặc là tính từ (trái nghĩa với absent). Nếu trọng âm trên âm tiết thứ hai, nó trở thành động từ (= to
offer=tặng quà). Các từ sau đây có tính chất tương tự:

Đối với tính từ kép, trọng âm trên phần thứ hai.

Đối với động từ kép, trọng âm trên phần thứ hai.

Quy tắc không phải luôn luôn đúng cho mọi từ , tốt hơn nên tra từ điển khi nghi ngờ hoặc gặp từ mới.
Ta biết: những danh từ và tính từ có 2 âm tiết thường có trọng âm ở âm tiết thứ nhất (apple, table,
happy), ngoại trừ hotel, lagoon, machine, event…; những danh từ có 2 âm tiết thường có trọng âm ở âm
tiết thứ nhất, khi chuyển sang động từ, trọng âm trên âm tiết thứ 2 (You are the suspect. I suspect you),
ngoại trừ respect (n & v), witness (n & v)…
Ví dụ: Danh từ có 2 phần ghép lại có trọng âm ở phần thứ nhất.

Ví dụ: Danh từ kép do 2 danh từ ghép lại, trọng âm chính được đặt ở danh từ thứ nhất.

Những động từ có âm tiết cuối là OW, EN, Y, EL, ER, LE, ISH, có trọng âm ở âm tiết thứ nhất.
Ví dụ: to open, to follow, to hurry, to struggle, to flatter, to finish
Phrasal Verbs (verb+preposition) thường có trọng âm trên giới từ hay tiểu từ (particle) nhưng danh từ
được tạo thành từ phrasal verbs thường có trọng âm ở phần thứ nhất.
