Most educational specialists believe that early schooling should provide children with an
awareness of their own abilities and the self-confidence to use their abilities. One approach
recognized by many experts as promoting these qualities is the Montessori method, first
practiced by Maria Montessori of Italy in the early 1900s. Nancy McCormick Ram Busch is
credited with popularizing the method in the United States, where today there are over 400
Montessori schools.
The method helps children learn for themselves by providing them with instructional
materials and tasks that facilitate acts of discovery and manipulation. Through such
exploration, children develop their sense of touch and learn how to do everyday tasks without
adult assistance. Other benefits include improvement in language skills, and acquaintance with
elements of science, music, and art.

Marshal was not inclined to split up the inheritance he had come into any more fairly.
C. Once it was found, they came across a note sewn in the lining of one of the pockets
saying they should look in an old family Bible. This Bible was found in the keeping of
Chaffin’s widow and examined in front of independent witnesses. Sure enough, there in the

I.A) Listen to the passage carefully then choose the correct answer to fill in the
blanks:
SHOP TILL YOU DROP !
The Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota is the biggest shopping
and entertainment place under one group in the US. It’s also one of the biggest retail
areas on the planet. There are more than 520 stores, seven nightclubs, and an indoor
amusement park, plus a huge aquarium called Underwater Adventures.
Over 40 million people visit the Mall of America every year – that’s more
than the combined total of visitors to Walt Disney World and the Grand Cayon. In the
summer, about 23,000 people work here. There are airline package tours from the UK,
Japan, and Europe – the passengers on these planes only go there to shop.
In the aquarium, you can walk through an underwater tunnel that is as long
as a soccer field. You can see sharks and other kinds of sea life. Outside, there is Camp
Spoony, the mall’s amusement park. It’s the largest indoor amusement park in the
United States.

When I arrive, the outside temperature was – 28

C! I thought, “Do I really
want to sleep in a hotel made of ice?”
But when I walked inside, I was amazed. It was warmer than outside –

o
C. This is because of the wallls – they’re 120 centimeters thick. And the hotel
was absolutely wonderful! The floors and ceilings were ice. There were beautiful ice
sculptures everywhere. There were also two art galleries, a movie theater, a skating
rink, and a wedding chapel. Even the drinking glasses were made of ice. And in the
rooms? Yes, even the beds were made of ice. I slept in a sleeping bag on a mattress, and
the mattress was on top of deer skins. It was a lot of fun!
They build the ice hotel every year in December, and you can stay there
from January to April. In 2002, more than 50,000 people visited the hotel to look at it,
and 3,000 guests stayed at least one night.
Beaches, mountains, lakes, museums – boring! The place to go is the ice
hotel.

The Secrets of a Very Long Life
There are several places in the world that are famous for people who live a very long
time. These places are usually in mountainous areas, far away from modern cities.
Hunza, in the Himalayas, is where many people over 100 years of age are still in
good physical health. Additionally, men of ninety and women of fifty still have
babies. Scientists think that these people have these benefits: a healthful unpolluted
environment with clean air and water; a simple diet high in vitamins, fiber, and
nutrition, but low in fat, cholesterol, sugar, and unnatural chemicals; and physical
work as well as other activities in the fields. The Caucasus Mountains in Russia are
also famous for the longevity of its inhabitants – mostly farmers. One reason for the
good health of the people might be regular exercise in the moderate climate: the
temperature is about 70 Fahrenheit all year long. In addition, the water from
mountain streams is high in minerals – a very valuable resource for people,
vegetables, fruits, and wildlife.
