Fiberscopes (máy ép sợi) are one of the most are one of the most important outcomes of the science of fiber
optics. Fibers made of glass and transparent acrylic (sợi) plastic are capable of conveying light energy, and when
thousands of these fibers are combined in what is called a fiberscope, they can transmit images. The most common
fiberscopes contain about 750,000 fibers, each 0.001 centimeter, or 10 microns (micro met), in diameter. For certain
uses, the diameter of the fiber may be as small as 5 microns.
Fiberscopes have a wide range of applications. In the medical field, physicians use fiberscopes to examine
internal organs and as an aid in delicate (tinh vi) surgeries. Miniature probes (máy siêu âm) have also been developed
to view muscle fiber, skin tissue, and blood cells. Fiberscopes have also found varied uses in industry, particularly to
inspect or control operations in inaccessible areas. Bundles of fiberscopes fused together in a solid plate, called a
faceplate, are being used in the manufacture of television tubes and other cathode-ray tube devices.
The most far reaching applications of fiber-optic technology are in communication. Optical fibers carry voice
messages for telephone service. The sound of the voice is electronically broken down into thousands of pulses per
second, which causes a transmitting laser to send coordinated pulses of light through the optical fibers. At the
receiving end, the light pulses are converted to electrical signals and the voice message is reconstructed. Light-wave
communication systems can handle an immensely greater number of telephone calls and television programs than the
current system, and they will form the basis of the “electronic superhighway” expected to crisscross (truyền qua dây,
cáp) the nation in the near future of the information age.
Question 61: How do optical fibers carry voice message?

Aging is the process of growing old. It occurs eventually in every living thing provided, of course, that an illness or
accident does not kill it prematurely. The most familiar outward (bên ngoài) signs of aging may be seen in old people,
such as the graying of the hair and the wrinkling of the skin. Signs of aging in a pet dog or cat include loss of
playfulness and energy, a decline in hearing and eyesight, or even a slight graying of the coat. Plants age too, but the
signs are much harder to detect.
Most body plants grow bigger and stronger, and function more efficiently during childhood. They reach their peak at
the time of maturity, or early adulthood. After that they begin to decline. Bones, for example, gradually become lighter
and more brittle. In the aged, the joints between the bones also become rigid (cứng, rắn) and more flexible. This can
make moving very painful.
All the major organs of the body show signs aging. The brain, for example, works less efficiently, and even gets
smaller in size. Thinking processes of all sorts are slowed down. Old people often have trouble in remembering recent
events.
One of the most serious changes of old age occurs in the arteries (mạch), the blood vessels that lead from the heart.
They become thickened and constricted, allowing less blood to flow to the rest of body. This condition accounts,
directly or indirectly, for many of the diseases of the aged. It may, for example, result in heart attack.
Aging is not a uniform process. Different parts of the body wear out at different rates. There are great differences
among people in their rate of aging. Even the cells of the body differ in the way they age. The majority of cells are
capable of reproducing themselves many times during the course of a lifetime. Nerve cells and muscle fibers can never
be replaced once they wear out.

Question 79. When the brain begins to age, _________.

each of the blanks from 51 to 60.
Technology is used for the (51)___ of human needs and production is increased by technology. Science and
technology, the (52)___ concerned with know-what and the latter with know-how, are continuously conditioning
man's world view and have (53)___ material standards beyond any earlier vision of man's potential. However, in this
science and technology are too much concerned with quantity at the expense of (54)___ . Technology has made
(55)___ the mass production of articles and mass production seems to have reduced the quality of goods. If a motor-
car in the past was made to last, today it is made to be thrown away and (56)___. While the quality in terms of new
features has improved, (57)___ is of little concern to manufacturers. In their drive to expand markets and be
competitive, manufacturers ignore quality and are concerned with quantity or the number of products that can be sold.
Evolving technology encourages the economy of transience which is fast replacing the economy of
permanence of the old world. Medical technology prolongs life and reduces the mortality rate, but the quality of life
(58)___. Genetics has increased agricultural productivity, and the Green Revolution that it set in motion has resulted in
high-yielding variety of wheat, rice paddy, etc., but they (59)___ the quality which the traditional variety, though low-

vessels with stimulated ones made of plastic; the replacement of heart valves with plastic substitutes; the transplanting
of tissues such as the lens of the eye; the invention of the artificial kidney to clean the blood of poisons at regular
intervals and the development of heart and lung machines to keep patients alive during very long operations. All these
things open a hopeful vista (viễn cảnh) for the future of surgery.
One of the most revolutionary areas of modern surgery is that of organ transplants. Until a few years ago, no
person, except an identical twin, was able to accept into his body the tissues of smother person without reacting
against them and eventually killing them. Recently, however, it has been discovered that with the use of x-rays and
special drugs, it is possible to graft tissues from one person to another which will survive for periods of a year or more.
Kidneys have been successfully transplanted between non-identical twins. Heart and lung transplants have been
reasonably successful in animals, though rejection problems in humans have yet to be solved.
'Spare parts' surgery, the simple routine replacement of all worn-out organs by new ones, is still a dream of
the distant future. As yet, surgery is not ready for such miracles. In the meantime, you can be happy if your doctor says
to you. 'Yes, I think it is possible to operate on you for this condition.'

Marburg virus die from the disease. However, the Marburg virus has not become a pandemic because most people die
within three days of getting the disease. This means that the virus does not have enough time to spread to a large
number of people. The flu virus of 1918, on the other hand, generally took about a week to ten days to kill its victims,
so it had more time to spread.
While we may never be able to completely stop pandemics, we can make them less common. Doctors carefully
monitor new diseases that they fear could become pandemics. For example, in 2002 and 2003, doctors carefully
watched SARS. Their health warnings may have prevented SARS from becoming a pandemic.

Since water is the basis of life, composing the greater part of the tissues of all living things, the crucial problem of
desert animals is to survive in a world where sources of flowing water are rare. And since man’s inexorable necessity
is to absorb large quantities of water at frequent intervals, he can scarcely comprehend that many creatures of the
desert pass their entire lives without a single drop.
Uncompromising as it is, the desert has not eliminated life but only those forms unable to withstand its desiccating
effects. No moist-skinned, water-loving animals can exist there. Few large animals are found. The giants of the North
American desert are the deer, the coyote, and the bobcat. Since desert country is open, it holds more swift-footed
running and leaping creatures than the tangled forest. Its population is largely nocturnal, silent, filled with reticence,
and ruled by stealth. Yet they are not emaciated. Having adapted to their austere environment, they are as healthy as
animals anywhere else in the word.
The secret of their adjustment lies in the combination of behavior and physiology. None could survive if, like
mad dogs and Englishmen, they went out in the midday sun; many would die in a matter of minutes. So most of them
pass the burning hours asleep in cool, humid burrows underneath the ground, emerging to hunt only by night. The
surface of the sun-baked desert averages around 150 degrees, but 18 inches down the temperature is only 60 degrees.

– to talk, run, climb, whistle, ride a bicycle – compare their own performances with those of more skilled people, and
slowly make the needed changes. But in school we never give a child a chance to find out his mistakes for himself, let
alone correct them. We do it all for him. We act as if we thought that he would never notice a mistake unless it was
pointed out to him, or correct it unless he was made to. Soon he becomes dependent on the teacher. Let him do it
himself. Let him work out, with the help of other children if he wants it, what this word says, what the answer is to that
problem, whether this is a good way of saying or doing this or not.
If it is a matter of right answers, as it may be in mathematics or science, give him the answer book. Let him
correct his own papers. Why should we teachers waste time on such routine work? Our job should be to help the child
when he tells us that he can’t find the way to get the right answer. Let’s end all this nonsense of grades, exam, marks.
Let us throw them all out, and let the children learn what all educated persons must someday learn, how to measure
their own understanding, how to know what they know or do not know.
Let them get on with this job in the way that seems most sensible to them, with our help as school teachers if
they ask for it. The idea that there is a body of knowledge to be learnt at school and used for the rest of one’s life is
nonsense in a world as complicated and rapidly changing as ours. Anxious parents and teachers say, “But suppose they
fail to learn something essential, something they will need to get on in the world?” Don’t worry! If it is essential, they
will go out into the world and learn it.

A rather surprising geographical feature of Antarctica is that a huge freshwater lake ,one of the world’s
largest and deepest , lies hidden there under four kilometers of ice .Now known as Lake Vostok, this huge body of
water is located under the ice block that comprises Antarctica . The lake is able to exist in its unfrozen state beneath
this block of ice because its waters are warmed by geothermal heat from the earth’s core .The thick glacier above Lake
Vostok actually insulates it from the frigid temperatures on the surface .
The lake was first discovered in the 1970s while a research team was conducting an aerial survey of the
area .Radio waves from the survey equipment penetrated the ice and revealed a body of water of indeterminate size. It
was not until much more recently that data collected by satellite made scientists aware of the tremendous size of the
lake ; the satellite –borne radar detected an extremely flat region where the ice remains level because it is floating on
the water of the lake .
The discovery of such a huge freshwater lake trapped under Antarctica is of interest to the scientific
community because of the potential that the lake contains ancient microbes that have survived for thousands upon
thousands of years, unaffected by factors such as nuclear fallout and elevated ultraviolet light that have affected
organism in more exposed areas .The downside of the discovery, however, lies in the difficulty of conducting research
on the lake in such a harsh climate and in the problems associated with obtaining uncontaminated samples from the
lake without actually exposing the lake to contamination. Scientists are looking for possible way to accomplish this.
