Câu này gồm có hai phần được ngăn cách nhau bằng dấu phẩy. Phần thứ nhất được viết ở thể xác
định (Positive). Phần thứ hai ở thể nghi vấn phủ định. Phần nghi vấn này được thành lập bằng chủ
từ của phần thứ nhất và trợ động từ của phần thứ nhất.
Dạng câu hỏi này được gọi là câu hỏi đuôi (Question Tag).
Phần câu hỏi này có thể dịch là phải không, phải không nào hay cách khác tùy thuộc vào câu nói.
Câu hỏi có dạng nghi vấn phủ định nếu phần thứ nhất là xác định.
Câu hỏi có dạng nghi vấn nếu phần thứ nhất là phủ định.
Xem kỹ các ví dụ sau:
Tom won’t be late, will he?
(Tom sẽ không bị trễ, phải không?)
They don’t like us, do they?
(Họ không thích chúng tôi, phải không?)
Ann will be here soon, won’t she?
(Chẳng bao lâu nữa Ann sẽ có mặt ở đây, phải không?)
They were very angry, weren’t they?
(Họ giận lắm phải không?)
Ý nghĩa của câu hỏi đuôi còn tùy thuộc vào cách chúng ta nói. Nếu đọc xuống giọng ở cuối câu hỏi
thì thực sự chúng ta không muốn hỏi mà là chúng ta đang trông chờ người ta đồng ý với điều mình
nói. Khi lên giọng ở cuối câu hỏi thì mới là một câu hỏi thật sự.
Chúng ta cũng cần để ý ý nghĩa của câu trả lời Yes hoặc No đối với câu hỏi đuôi. Xét trường hợp
này:

1. Hiện tại đơn với TO BE:
- HE IS HANDSOME, ISN'T HE? = Anh ấy đẹp trai, đúng không?
- YOU ARE WORRIED, AREN'T YOU? = Bạn đang lo lắng, phải không?
- Đặc biệt với I AM , câu hỏi đuôi phải là AREN'T I:
+ I AM RIGHT, AREN'T I?
- Với I AM NOT, câu hỏi đuôi sẽ là AM I như quy tắc.
+ I AM NOT GUILTY, AM I?
2. Hiện tại đơn động từ thường: mượn trợ động từ DO hoặc DOES tùy theo chủ ngữ (xem lại bài Thì
hiện tại đơn với động từ thường nếu cần)
- THEY LIKE ME, DON'T THEY?
- SHE LOVES YOU, DOESN'T SHE?
3. Thì quá khứ đơn với động từ thường: mượn trợ động từ DID, quá khứđơn với TO BE: WAS hoặc
WERE:
- YOU LIED TO ME, DIDN'T YOU?
- HE DIDN'T COME HERE, DID HE?
- HE WAS FRIENDLY, WASN'T HE?
4. Thì hiện tại hoàn thành hoặc hiện tại hoàn thành tiếp diễn: mượn trợ động từ HAVE hoặc HAS

5. Thì quá khứ hoàn thành hoặc quá khứ hoàn thành tiếp diễn: mượn trợ động từ HAD:

* Những trường hợp đặc biệt cần lưu ý:
** USED TO: từng (diễn tả thói quen, hành động thường lập đi lập lại trong quá khứ)
- Trường hợp này, ta cứ việc xem USED TO là một động từ chia ở thì quá khứ. Do đó, câu hỏi đuôi
tương ứng chỉ cần mượn trợ động từ DID
