On April morning each year, runners from around the world gather in the
tiny town of Hopkinton, Massachusetts. A sign on Hopkinton Green greets
them . It reads:“ Welcome to Hopkinton. It all starts here.” The “it” that starts
in Hopkinton is the famous Boston Marathon, an annual race first run on April
19, 1897.
The first Boston Marathon was organised by the Boston Athletic
Association, America’s oldest athletic club. Inspired by Olympic marathon,
members planned a 24.5 mile course. It starting point was the rural town of
Ashland. Fifteen men ran in that first race. It has since become the world’s
oldest annual marathon.
Today the road to Boston is paved, but racers follow nearly the same course
as those first fifteen men. In 1924, the starting point was moved from Ashland
southwest to Hopkinton, adding distance to the route.
Each contestant in the marathon must be dedicated marathoner. It takes
hard work to qualify for a spot in this race, and most runners take years
