Australia and Africa. Jeans come in many colors and styles. They can be very expensive or
inexpensive. Some people wear jeans everywhere they go. Where did blue jeans come from?
In 1874, a man name Levi Strauss move to the United States from Bavaria (now part of
Germany). He went to work with his brothers at their store. After a few years there, he
decided to west to California. Then in 1853 Levi Strauss move to San Francisco and started
and business selling supplies to the miners. He called the business Levi Strauss & Company.
One day in 1872, a man wrote a letter to Levi Strauss. The man's name was Jacob Davis. He
suggested that Levi made pants with strong seams for miners, because miners' work was very
hard. He said that putting metal rivets on the pockets would make pants which were made of
denim and dyed blue with indigo for the California gold miners. The blue denim pants
immediately became popular with the miners. Denim was also a popular material in Europe
in fifteen century, because it was so strong.
There are black jeans, green and even red jeans. The most popular color of all is still
blue. People wear jeans to work, to school, to parties, and just relax. Why are jeans so popular
in the world? In the USA, they are the only kind of traditional American clothing. In the
other countries, young people wear them because they want to look modern. Jeans are a sign
of youth and independence.
