Marie Curie, the daughter of a secondary-school teacher, was born in Warsaw on November
7, 1867. She received a general education in local schools and some scientific training from her
father. As a brilliant and mature student with a rare gift of concentration, Marie harbored the
dream of a scientific career which was impossible for a woman at that time. But lack of funds
forced her to work as a private tutor.
And in 1891, the shy Marie, with very little money to live on, came to Paris to continue her
studies at the Sorbonne. In spite of her difficult living conditions, she worked extremely hard. She
passed a physics degree with flying colors, and went on to take another degree in mathematic. She
met Pierre Curie in the School of Physics in 1894 and in the following year they were married. From
then on, they worked together on their research. Pierre often helped her, and they devoted all their
time to working in their laboratory. In 1903, Marie became the first woman to receive a Doctor of
Science degree from the Sorbonne.
Decide whether the statements are true or false. Mark T or F at the end of the sentences.
