Lesson 1 : English Tenses
A. Present tenses
I. The present simple tense ( Thì Hiện tại đơn giản ) :
1. Adverbs :
• Every( morning, afternoon, evening, day, week, month, year )……
• In the ( morning, afternoon, evening, summer, winter .)…
• Never, sometimes, often, usually, always.
• Once, twice, three times / a day, week, month, year.…
2. Form :
a. Tobe = am, is, are = thì, là, ở
(+) S + tobe + adj/N/prep…. Eg : I’m a student.
(-) S + tobe + not + adi/N/prep She isn’t tall.
(?) Tobe + S + adj N/prep …. ? Are you from England ? – yes,I am/ No,I’m not.
(Wh-) Wh- tobe + S + ….. ? What is her name ? – her name is Mai.
b. Verbs ( V )
(+) I,we,you,they + V + O/adv …. Eg : I go to work at 7.00 everyday
She,he,It + Vs,es + O/adv …. She goes to work at 7.00 everyday.
(-) S + don’t/doesn’t + V(

) ….. They don’t like fish/ he doesn’t eat meat.
(?) Do/does + S + V(

) ……. ? Do you often get up early ? – yes,I do/ No,I don’t.
Does Nam watch TV after meals? – yes,he does/ No,he doesn’t.

When does she have English? – on Monday.
II. The present continuous tense ( Thì Hiện tại tiếp diễn ) :
1. Adverbs :

• 1. Form : S + have/has + been + V
-ing
+ for/since…..
Eg : I have been studying English since 2005/ I was in grade 6.
Mai has been looking for her bike for hours.
B. Past tenses
I. The past simple tense ( Thì QK Đ).
1. Adverbs :
• Yesterday,last night/week…, 2days/weeks/months ago.
• In 2005, this morning…
2. Form :
a. To be = was, were
+ S + was/were + N/adi/prep….. Eg : I was happy yesterday.
- S + was/were + not + N/adi/prep….. They weren’t at home last night.
? Was/were + S + N/adj/prep…..? Was she a student 3 years ago?
Wh- Wh- + was/were + S + …..? Where were you last Sunday?
b. Verbs
+ S + V-
ed/2
+ O/adv …….. Quang visited Ha Long in 2000.
She went to school at 6 this morning.
- S + did + not + V

…. He didn’t visit HL in 2003.
She didn’t go to school at 5 this morning.
? Did + S + V
