with other cities to The Games were very important to the ancient Greeks. They would even stop
wars with other cities to take part in them!. The athletes would take three months off to travel to
the stadium, compete and then return home to continue fighting.
The Game lasted for 1200 years until the Romans conquered Greece. Then in AD 393, the
Roman Emperor stopped the Games completely. He was a Christian and didn’t like the Games
because they were not Christian events. About 1500 years later, a French nobleman decided to
bring back the Games.
Nobleman wanted to organize a regular meeting of world – class athletes. He believed
that this would help to bring peace between countries. He finally arranged to bring back the
Olympic Games in 1896. At those Games, 40,000 spectators watched a total of 275 athletes from
13 countries take part in the first modern Olympic held in the Greek capital of Athens.
Nowadays, thanks to the French nobleman, wining a gold medal at the Olympic is once
