Order Anura - Frogs
• Adults lack tails and have four legs
• Body size ranges from 2-3 up to about 15 cm
• Aquatic larvae usually present
• Larvae are basically herbivorous
• Adults are never herbivorous
• 5 Families known from Cat Tien
• 30-40 species known from Cat Tien
Family Bufonidae - toads
• Stout frogs with warty bodies
• Pectoral girdle is arciferal
• Skin includes very toxic alkaloid poisons
• Often have bony ridges on head
• Often have elarged poison glands on head
• May reaach 12 cm body length
• Two species in one genus known from Cat Tien
– Bufo galeatus
– Bufo melanostictus

Family Ranidae
• A diverse array of small to large species
• Completely firmisternal pectoral girdle
• No fusion of metatarsals
• No intercalary cartilages but toe pads possible
• The huge genus Rana is now being subdivided
into several genera
• Normal larvae with oral disks and one spiracle on
the left side
