This minor thesis is aimed at finding out the teachers and students’ perceptions of the effectiveness of using Vietnamese translation in teaching and learning vocabulary. The study was conducted from February through May of the 2011 - 2012 academic year, and the data were analyzed by using both quantitative and qualitative methods. The study involves 3 teachers of English working with 6 to 17 years’ working experience and 152 10th form students at Vung cao Viet Bac High school in Thai Nguyen province. Questionnaire, 6 observations, interviews were conducted to seek the answers for the following research questions 1)What is the frequency of using Vietnamese translation in teaching English vocabulary to 10th form students? 2)What are the common vocabulary activities the teachers use to Giúp their students consolidate words after using Vietnamese translation? 3)What is the effectiveness of Vietnamese translation for learning vocabulary as perceived by the students? 4)What is the teachers’ perceived effectiveness of Vietnamese translation used for presenting new vocabulary? The overall findings of the survey show that teachers used Vietnamese translation technique for presenting vocabulary most frequently. There exist some limitations in using activities for words consolidation. The majority of respondents confirm that Vietnamese translation technique is an efficient method. Additionally, some useful implications are proposed based on research findings in order to Giúp teachers to construct and implement Vietnamese translation technique in vocabulary teaching more effectively
