The study entitled “An investigation into teaching grammar in context for first-year non-English major students at Chu Van An University” was conducted to investigate the effect of teaching grammar in context on grammar academic achievement and level of classroom participation of non-English major students at Chu Van An University. To achieve the aim of the study, the researcher adopted the randomized experimental research. The experiment involved a sample of 60 randomly selected non-English freshmen of Chu Van An University divided equally into control group and experimental group. The two teachers who were in charge of the two groups were chosen on the basis of similar educational qualifications, age, training, teaching experience and reputation at the school. The treatment of in-context grammar instruction was applied to the experimental group while the control group followed the traditional grammar teaching method. The experiment lasted for eight weeks during the first semester of 2011-2012 academic year and covered eight grammar lessons on tenses, modals, conditionals and passive voice. Grammar achievement tests and classroom observation method were employed as the instruments for data collection. The collected data were then statistically analyzed by using the independent samples t-Test and Paired sample t-Test of SPSS 15.0. The key findings of the study indicated that teaching English grammar using context improves students’ academic achievement in grammar, with respect to grammatical meaning and function and increases students’ level of classroom participation in grammar lessons. On this basis, the study recommended an implementation of context-based approach in grammar instruction and in other fields of English language teaching for ESL/EFL students
