Cooperative learning has been known as a successful teaching strategy. Therefore, researcher of this paper makes an attempt to apply the principles of cooperative learning to the teaching of English speaking skills in large classes. This study was carried out at Vietnam Maritime University with the participation of two large classes of first-year Information Technology students in the hope that it could solve common problems of large classes and enhance the students’ participation in speaking lessons. Theory of cooperative learning is reviewed regarding cooperative language learning and several aspects regarding teaching of speaking skills to large classes. Data collected via classroom observation sheets, students’ journals, speaking test scores, informal interviews and questionnaires showed great improvement in students’ participation which resulted in an atmosphere of achievement in speaking lessons
