In Vietnam, International Women’s Day is an important event and celebrated with gusto –
with women of all ages seemingly being showered with flowers and presents. In contrast, in the UK
it isn’t officially (1) at all. Indeed, I have to confess that before I came to Vietnam
I had never even (2) of International Women’s Day, let alone celebrated it. That

having been said, according to the IWD website, this year more than 116 events
(3) around the UK to celebrate the importance of this day, ranging from all female
workshops to film festivals, theatrical plays to a keep fit day.
To get a female perspective on women in the UK I spoke to a number of British
women (4) in Vietnam. Two of the key themes which emerged were that of
‘independence’ and ‘choice’. Samantha in HCMC felt that, “Nowadays, British women
