Bees, classified into over 10,000 species, are insects found in almost every part of the
world except the northernmost and southernmost regions. One commonly known species is the
honeybee, the only bee that produces honey and wax. Humans use the wax in making candles,
lipsticks, and other products, and they use the honey as a food. While gathering the nectar and
pollen with which they make honey, bees are simultaneously helping to fertilize the flowers on
which they land. Many fruits and vegetables would not survive if bees did not carry the pollen
from blossom to blossom.
Bees live in a structured environment and social structure within a hive, which is a nest
with storage space for the honey. The different types of bees each perform a unique function.

The worker bee carries nectar to hive in a special stomach called a honey stomach. Other workers
make bees wax and shape it into a honeycomb, which is a water-proof mass of six-sided
compartments, or cells. The queen lay eggs in completed cells. As the workers build more cells,
the queen lays more eggs.
All workers, like the queen, are female, but the workers are smaller than the queen. The
male honeybees are called drones; they do no work and cannot sting. They are developed from
unfertilized eggs, and their only job is to impregnate a queen. The queen must be fertilized in
order to lay worker eggs. During the use, the workers block the drones from the honey so that
they will starve to death.
Question 45: All of the following are characteristic of a honeycomb except ___________.

Question 54: According to the passage, people use honey _____________.
A. to make cakes B. as handbags C. as clothes D. to make candles

The advent of the Internet may be one of the most important technological developments in
recent years. Never before have so many people had access to so many different sources of
information. For all of the Internet’s advantages, however, people are currently becoming aware
of some of its drawbacks and are looking for creative solutions. Among the current problems,

which include a general lack of reliability and numerous security concerns, the most crucial is
speed.
First of all, the Internet has grown very quickly. In 1990, only a few academics had ever
heard of the Internet. In 1996, over 50 million people used it. Every year, the number of people
with access to the Internet doubles. The rapid growth has been a problem. The computer systems
which run the Internet have not been able to keep up with the demand. Also, sometimes, a
request for information must pass through many routing computers before the information can
be obtained. A request for information made in Paris might have to go through computers in
New York, Los Angeles and Tokyo in order to obtain the required information. Consequently,
the service is often slow and unpredictable. Service also tends to be worse when the Internet is
busiest - during the business day of the Western Hemisphere - which is also when companies
need its service the most.
Some people are trying to harness the power of networked computers in such a way as to
avoid this problem. In 1995, a group of American universities banded together to form what has
come to be known as Internet II. Internet II is a smaller, more specialized system intended for
academic use. Since it is more specialized, fewer users are allowed access. Consequently, the
time required to receive information has decreased.
Businesses are beginning to explore a possible analogue to the Internet II. Many
businesses are creating their own “Intranets”. These are systems that can only be used by the
members of the same company. In theory, fewer users should translate into a faster system.
Intranets are very useful for large national and international companies whose branches need to

A. use B. alternative C. solution D. similarity
Question 61: According to the passage, which of the following is not true of the Internet?
A. It has become increasingly less popular.
B. It tends to be unreliable.
C. It is too expensive to access.
D. It has created a sense of financial security.
Question 62: The word “their” refers to __________.
A. competitors B. company employees
C. Intranets D. companies
Question 63: The word “obtained” is closest in meaning to ________.
A. understood B. acquired C. purchased D. distributed
Question 64: According to the author, what is one reason why the Internet is sometimes slow?
A. Phone lines are often too busy with phone calls and fax transmissions to handle Internet
traffic.
B. Scientists take up too much time on the Internet , thus slowing it down for everyone else.
C. Often a request must travel through many computers before it reaches its final destination.
D. Most people do not have computers that are fast enough to take advantage of the Internet.
