I. Một số quy luật chung về đặt trọng âm trong từ.
1. Từ một âm tiết mang trọng âm chính: Thờng thì trong phần phiên âm quốc tế không ghi trọng âm
của từ một âm tiết.
2. Một số quy luật giúp ngời học đoán đợc vị trí của trọng âm trong từ:
1. Các danh từ và tính từ hai âm tiết thờng có âm tiết thứ nhất nhận trọng âm.
Ví dụ: 'present (adj), 'conduct (n), 'contrast (n), 'rebel (n)
Ngoại lệ: ma'chine (n), mis'take (n), a'lone (adj)
2. Các động từ hai âm tiết thờng có âm tiết thứ hai nhận trọng âm.
Ví dụ: pre'sent, con'duct, con'trast, re'bel
Tuy nhiên, một số động từ hai âm tiết lại có trọng âm chính rơi vào âm tiết đầu tiên.
Ví dụ: 'promise, 'answer, 'enter, 'offer, 'listen, 'happen, 'open
3. Các tiền tố: un-, im-, in-, và hậu tố thờng đợc dùng để thêm vào một từ để tạo thành từ dài hơn. Và
thông thờng trọng âm chính ở những từ dài hơn này thờng không đổi, nghĩa là vẫn ở âm tiết đợc nhấn của từ
gốc.
Ví dụ: 'possible (adj): có thể im'posisble (adj): không thể
de'velop (v): phát triển de'velopment (n): sự phát triển
'happy (adj): hạnh phúc 'happiness (n): niềm hạnh phúc
4. Âm tiết đi liền trớc hậu tố -tion nhận trọng âm.
Ví dụ: 'nation, pro'tection, interpre'tation.
5. Âm tiết liền trớc hậu tố -sion nhận trọng âm.
Ví dụ: de'cision, con'clusion, per'mission
Ngoại lệ: 'television (n)
6. Âm tiết liền trớc hậu tố -ic, -ical nhận trọng âm.
Ví dụ: e'lectric, sta'tistic, eco'nomic, po'litical, 'practical
Ngoại lệ: 'Arabic, 'Catholic, 'rhectoric, a'rithmetic, 'lunatic, 'politics.
7. Âm tiết liền trớc hậu tố -ity nhận trọng âm.
Ví dụ: a'bility, ac'tivity, co'mmunity, sim'plicity, curi'osity
8. Âm tiết liền trớc hậu tố -ial, -ially nhận trọng âm.
Ví dụ: 'facial, me'morial, e'ssentially, arti'ficially
