the seventeenth century have begun: the expansion and elaboration of an economy born in the great age of
capitalist expansion.
Our excellent natural resources paved the way for the development of abundant capital to increase our
growth. Capital includes the tools – such as: machines, vehicles, and buildings – that makes the outputs of
labor and resources more valuable. But it also includes the funds necessary to buy those tools. If a society had
to consume everything it produced just to stay alive, nothing could be put aside to increase future productions.
But if a farmer can grow more corn than his family needs to eat, he can use the surplus as seed to increase the
next crop, or to feed workers who build tractors. This process of capital accumulation was aided in the
American economy by our cultural heritage. Saving played an important role in the European tradition. It
contributed to American’s motivation to put something aside today for the tools to buy tomorrow.
The great bulk of the accumulated wealth of America, as distinguished from what was consumed, was
derived either directly or indirectly from trade. Though some manufacturing existed, its role in the
accumulation of capital was negligible. A merchant class of opulent proportions was already visible in the
seaboard cities, its wealth as the obvious consequence of shrewd and resourceful management of the carrying
trade. Even the rich planters of tidewater Virginia and the rice coast of South Carolina finally depended for
their genteel way of life upon the ships and merchants who sold their tobacco and rice in the markets of
Europe. As colonial production rose and trade expanded, a business community emerged in the colonies,
linking the provinces by lines of trade and identity of interest.

Asian elephants used to live in the forests from Iraq to Southern China. Since these forests were cut
down to make room for farms and villages, the elephants had to live in small, hilly regions. These small areas
cannot supply enough food for them. An adult elephant eats about 331 pounds of grasses, leaves and other
plants each day. When forests were larger, Asian elephants migrated with the seasons. In this way, they found
new food supplies. The plants and trees could also grow again after elephants left.
Today, there is nowhere for the elephants to go. Experts say that the Asian elephant population is
about 55,000 living on a habitat of about 19,000 square miles (30,400 square kilometres). In contrast to this,
the African elephant population is about 10 times this size and live on almost 3 million square miles (4.8

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions.
Very few people in the modern world obtain their food supply by hunting and gathering in the natural
environment surrounding their homes. This method of harvesting from nature's provision is the oldest known
subsistence strategy and has been practised for at least the last two million years. It was, indeed, the only way
to obtain food until rudimentary farming and the domestication of wild animals were introduced about 10,000
years ago.
Because hunter-gatherers have fared poorly in comparison with their agricultural cousins, their numbers
have dwindled, and they have been forced to live in marginal environments, such as deserts and arctic
wastelands. In higher latitudes, the shorter growing seasons have restricted the availability of plant life. Such
conditions have caused a greater dependence on hunting, and on fishing along the coasts and waterways. The
abundance of vegetation in the lower latitudes of the tropics, on the other hand, has provided a greater
opportunity for gathering a variety of plants. In short, the environmental differences have restricted the diet
and have limited possibilities for the development of subsistence societies.
Contemporary hunter-gatherers may help us understand our prehistoric ancestors. We know from the
observation of modern hunter-gatherers in both Africa and Alaska that a society based on hunting and
gathering must be very mobile. While the entire community camps in a central location, a smaller party
harvests the food within a reasonable distance from the camp. When the food in the area has become

We are now living in the Era of the Information technology, and we feel happy to be supported by
modern technologies which make our lives more comfortable and convenient. For me, information technology
brings me so many positive changes though sometimes it does cause some troubles.
It is undeniable that information technology helps bring my family members closer together as we
always keep in touch with help of telephones, internet, and other conveniences. Beside, information
technology helps us stay in touch with the world around. Every day, we are well-informed by reading news,
watching videos, browsing websites. We can also learn much about the entire world from our own tables or
even beds. Information technology provides us more choices of how, where, when and what to do things.
Beneficially, we have more chances to earn because there are always numerous jobs available in the IT field
that helps us make money and shop. Moreover, information technology helps us to broaden our knowledge as
we can learn or take various online and offline courses. Socially, we seem to have more and more friends
low-lying generators and electrical switchgear in reactor basements and external pumps for supplying cooling
seawater. The connection to the electrical grid was broken. All power for cooling was lost and reactors started
to overheat, due to natural decay of the fission products created before shutdown. The flooding and
earthquake damage hindered external assistance.
Evidence soon arose of partial core meltdown in reactors 1, 2, and 3; hydrogen explosions destroyed
the upper cladding of the buildings housing reactors 1, 3, and 4; an explosion damaged the containment inside
reactor 2; multiple fires broke out at reactor 4. Despite being initially shutdown, reactors 5 and 6 began to
overheat. Fuel rods stored in pools in each reactor building began to overheat as water levels in the pools
dropped. Fears of radiation leaks led to a 20-kilometre (12 mi) radius evacuation around the plant while
workers suffered radiation exposure and were temporarily evacuated at various times. One generator at unit 6
was restarted on 17 March allowing some cooling at units 5 and 6 which were least damaged. Grid power was
restored to parts of the plant on 20 March, but machinery for reactors 1 through 4, damaged by floods, fires
and explosions, remained inoperable. Flooding with radioactive water through the basements of units 1–4
continues to prevent access to carry out repairs.
Measurements taken by the Japanese science ministry and education ministry in areas of northern
Japan 30–50 km from the plant showed radioactive caesium levels high enough to cause concern. Food grown
in the area was banned from sale. It was suggested that worldwide measurements of iodine-131 and caesium-
137 indicate that the releases from Fukushima are of the same order of magnitude as the releases of those
isotopes from the Chernobyl disaster in 1986; Tokyo officials temporarily recommended that tap water should
not be used to prepare food for infants. Plutonium contamination has been detected in the soil at two sites in
the plant. Two workers hospitalized as a precaution on 25 March had been exposed to between 2000 and
6000 mSv of radiation at their ankles when standing in water in unit 3.

tend to be out to work a lot and they seem to spend little time with their children. Significantly, breeding
makes the relation between women and their children more close-knit.
On the contrary, there are many single fathers who can totally dedicate their lives to their children.
And, according to some researches, children of single mothers tend to have more chance of crime. It is also
true that no one come to parenthood and immediately knows everything. Learning and practicing can help
fathers perform as well as mothers. Moreover, men and women bring different benefits to their children.
People believe that fathers can teach their children better than mothers in many ways. Commonly, children
regard their fathers as more energetic, strong-willed, and ambitious whereas mothers as more kind-hearted,
sensitive, and emotional.
To sum up, there are different good things women and men can do for their children. It is obvious that parents
who love their children can do their tasks well, and both fathers and mothers give their children good things
to some extent. It will be lucky and far better for a child to be brought up by both good father and mother.
Parents should join hands to give their children good life and education.

couples will try to arrange their work schedules so that they work (37) hours or shifts in order that one
parent is always home with the children. Since childcare is expensive, this saves money for the young couple
trying to establish (38) and provide a secure environment for the family. Husband and wife may also
share household (39) Some fathers are just as capable as mothers at cooking dinner, changing and
bathing the baby, and doing the laundry.
In some cases, the woman’s salary is for family (40) and the father becomes the “househusband."
These cases are still fairly rare. One positive trend, however, is that fathers seem to be spending more time
with their children. In a recent survey, 41% of the children sampled said they spend equal time with their
mothers and fathers. “This is one of our most (41) cultural changes,” says Dr. Leon Hoffman, who co-
directs the Parent Child Center at the New York Psychoanalytic Society. In practice, for over 30 years,
Hoffman has found "a very dramatic difference in the involvement of the father in everything from care-
taking to general decision (42) around kids' lives.”
Another factor has recently been added to the childcare (43) The number of people who work from
home nearly full-time rose 23% from the last decade. The (44) of technology - computers, faxes,
teleconferencing - has made it easier for at-home workers to be constantly in touch. Will this new flexibility in
the workforce bring a positive change for the (45) of children? Only time will tell.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the best
answer to each of the following questions.
Speed reading is not just a parlour trick you can use to impress your friends and family. For many, it's a
necessary tool for managing time and information in the fast-paced business world; and for many others,
specifically students, it's the only way to get through reading-heavy class loads.
The practiced speed reader can pick up a lengthy document or a thick stack of paper and use their skill to get
the meat of their subject by skimming for the most important details and information. Without developing the
ability to speed read, this time-saving technique is merely flipping through pages fast.
